Comparision and Contrast Essay

To begin, I say that Gothic Style in literature, make similar even different stories. In my case I'm going to compare "The Fall of the House of Usher"and "A Rose for Emily". They are about different topics, but thanks to the Gothic Style used in both, you can see how the two of them seems to be alike.

The main characters in the story feature similar traits, since both stories are of the similar style. Also, they differ in so many things. One example of that is the character's insanity level, is is clear that Emily Grierson is too insane. In contrast to Roderick Usher; that isn't. She kills a man, slept with the cadaver, and above all, she doesn't see anything wrong in it. Roderick, however, is merely ill, he honestly thinks his sister is dead, but after realizing that she wasn't he feels scared. Roderick is though not guilty of murder, quite remorsely after burying her sister, but Emily, on the other hand, shows no remorse and keeps the cadaver in her attic, that's crazy.

There is another point in the comparison of these two stories; the isolating relationships that are presented among the main characters. Emily and Homer, this relation is a concerning one because of the challenges between Emily and Homer. The town's people, also her cousins, didn't want that relation for Emily. I think that this was a factor to the grown of the love from Emily's part to him. He represents modernization, maybe she wants to feel modern, because all the lost years of exploring the world due to her father. Similar to the relation of Madeline and Usher. Madeline was Roderick's only companion for long years, his last and only relative on earth. Both relationships bring the main characters to disconnect from the world. To Emily, Homer represents all she can do, have, or be. For Usher, similar to Emily, Madeline is all what he has, the only ones left from the family.

The decaying of the mansions as the setting is the other point in my comparison. Emily's house deteriorating represents the decay of her family with the past of years. Filled with dust and shadows. The house represents the dark side of Emily and all the things she had passed thru. Similar to Roderick mansion that collapses at the end, representing the downfall of the Usher family. The siblings souls dissapears with the house, like arriving to a better place.

To conclude, I can say that these two stories were great. I enjoyed the suspense details that the authors offered me. The Gothic Style is a good way to communicate with the reader, because the reader always is involved with the story.
